The second vintage of the nineties after Krug 1990. In Champagne 1995 began with a mild winter that was rainy with two short periods of frost in January and March followed by a warm and sunny spring with some April frosts. Nature gifted the ripening season with a long period of heat from the end of June to the harvest, giving expressive fruit with great levels of freshness and character.
While a Krug Vintage normally leaves the cellars after 10 years, the House keeps a limited number of these bottles, which were disgorged at the same time, under optimal conditions to present again at a later date. These bottles of Krug Vintage are known as Back Vintages. This is one of those bottles, being disgorged in 2009.

The extra bottle aging has certainly added levels of complexity to the wine. Deep and rustic aromas of butter-fried chanterelles, roasted almonds, ripe yellow fruits, brown butter.
On the palate there’s more nutty flavors, walnuts, hazelnuts, as well as caramel, yeast extract, dark bread crust, pastry, honey. Ripe yellow apples & plums, ripe tropical fruit, dried apricots & peaches.

Despite its age, there is a pronounced acidity that sometimes overtakes the more subtle and delicate aspects of the wine, which ultimately is its biggest “flaw”. This champagne is quite grandiose and presents plenty of flavors and elements for the lucky drinker to digest. All of these elements are unfortunately not in perfect balance, and the wine becomes somewhat unbalanced and overwhelming. The mousse is good, but the bubbles fade after a while. Despite this, the wine has a beautiful concentration, strong acidity and complex flavors. Big personality!
