Ch. L`evangile is the Rotschild familiy’s effort to capture the essence of Pomerol, a marriage of elegance, precision and complexity.

They are located in a lucrative part of Pomerol, and is bordered to the north by Château Pétrus, and is separated from Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion to the south by nothing more than a secondary road. The vineyard covers 22 hectares, made up of sandy clay soil with pure gravel, on a subsoil containing iron residues.

The grape varieties consist of Merlot (80%) which contributes to the wine’s deep complex fruity flavour and body, and “Bouchet”, the local name for Cabernet Franc (20%), which brings finesse and structure. They practice pretty traditional techniques and production is limited.

We were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to taste the 2002 and the superb 2009 vintage. Both wines were excellent and made the comparison interesting and a great showcase of the difference between the vintages. This gave us a nice sneak peek into the ageing potential of Ch. L`evangile.

It was very interesting to experience the difference between the two wines, who not only differentiated in vintages, but also grape blend. We were really blown away by the concentration and complexity of the 2009 vintage, which was delicious now, but show such great ageing potential! The 2002 vintage drinks beautifully now and is probably around its ideal drinking window. Both wines were fantastic, just like the visit to the beautiful chateau they came from! Cheers!
